Firefly S390L Digital Slit Lamp
The Firefly is a digital slit lamp built around a wide-dynamic-range 5-megapixel camera, using wavelengths close to natural light so the cornea, lens and iris hold their structural detail in one exposure. Automatic exposure and auto white balance mean there are no parameters to set before a capture. Its MediView software handles patient records, images and video, supports DICOM for hospital systems, and shares over HDMI or to a cloud server for telemedicine review. Three optional modules extend it: infrared meibography for meibomian gland observation, orthokeratology for lens-fitting capture, and a dry eye diagnostics module. For practices that want anterior segment findings documented in the lane rather than described from memory, with a path into dry eye work when they are ready for it.
What it does
- 5.0 megapixel wide-dynamic-range camera (2592 × 1944) with automatic exposure and auto white balance
- Optical resolution up to 200 lp/mm
- 5-step Galilean magnification: 6.3×, 10×, 16×, 25×, 40×
- Six aperture settings for depth-of-field and brightness control
- Built-in yellow filter and cobalt blue for sodium fluorescein contrast
- MediView software: patient records, image and video management, keyword search, DICOM support
- HDMI sharing, plus LAN or cloud review in telemedicine mode
- Optional modules: meibography (infrared), orthokeratology lens fitting, and dry eye diagnostics
Is it right for your practice?
Best fit
Comprehensive ophthalmology, medical optometry and anterior segment practices that want slit lamp findings documented as images rather than notes.
Why consider it
The camera is engineered into the optical path rather than bolted on as an aftermarket adapter, so exposure and white balance are automatic and the operator sets nothing before capture. Meibography, orthokeratology and dry eye work are modules, so the slit lamp can be bought for what you need now.
What to compare
If nobody in the practice currently photographs anterior segment findings, the question is whether the workflow will change: a digital slit lamp that gets used as an ordinary slit lamp only pays off if imaging becomes part of the routine workflow. Compare against adding a camera adapter to the lamp you have.
Ask me about
Which modules match your case mix, what the naming is currently (Eyefficient has used S-390 and Firefly for this instrument) and whether a demo unit can sit in the lane for a week before you decide.
