OPD-Scan III Wavefront Aberrometer
Five instruments, over twenty measurements, about ten seconds an eye
The OPD-Scan III is an autorefractor, keratometer, pupillometer, corneal topographer and wavefront aberrometer in one instrument, and it captures more than twenty diagnostic measurements in around ten seconds per eye. It is the answer when a patient's refraction does not explain their complaint. The point spread function maps show you whether the problem is corneal or lenticular, which is a conversation you cannot have from a refraction alone.
What it does
- Five instruments in one: autorefractor, keratometer, pupillometer, corneal topographer, wavefront aberrometer
- Over 20 diagnostic measurements in as little as 10 seconds per eye
- 2,520 light vector data points across zones up to 9.5 mm
- Pupillometry to 9.5 mm, with separate wavefront refractions at 4 mm and 6 mm or mesopic zones
- Angle kappa, angle alpha, higher-order aberrations, average pupil power, RMS and point spread function
- Automatic retro illumination capture for decentered, rotated or tilted IOLs
- Pre-op toric axis alignment mapped to iris or other physical landmarks
- Auto alignment, tracking and capture with a 10.4-inch LCD touchscreen
- Specialty contact lens maps for direct ordering from lens companies
Is it right for your practice?
Best fit
Cataract and refractive surgery practices, specialty contact lens fitters, and any comprehensive practice with a population of difficult-to-refract patients.
Why consider it
It answers the question the refraction cannot. Five instruments in one - autorefractor, keratometer, pupillometer, corneal topographer and wavefront aberrometer - capture over twenty measurements in about ten seconds an eye, and the point spread function maps separate the corneal contribution from the lenticular one. Marco's own case example is a post-LASIK patient with dysfunctional lens syndrome who believed she needed another LASIK treatment when the problem was the lens. Retro illumination verifies IOL axis alignment post-op, pre-op toric alignment maps to the iris, and separate wavefront refractions at 4 mm and 6 mm give a defensible starting point for day and night prescriptions.
What to compare
If what you need is pre-test throughput rather than diagnostic depth, this is a lot of instrument to buy for it - the ARK-1 series measures faster per patient and costs considerably less. The OPD earns its place when you are regularly unable to explain why a patient is unhappy, or when you are doing surgical planning. If your gap is the conversation with the patient rather than the measurement, look at the Visual System version instead, which is the same instrument with the reporting rebuilt.
Ask me about
How often you meet the unhappy-patient-with-good-numbers case, whether your surgical volume justifies the IOL features, and how the OPD hands data to your TRS refractor if you have one.
